WHERE: Arizona /
WHEN: 1998
PHOTOGRAPHER: Peter Essick
"Say the word 'cactus[仙人掌],' and many people get a mental picture of a thick, straight up trunk with rounded tip, and sturdy[强健的] branches curving[弯曲] to the vertical[垂直] in a candelabra effect[烛台状]. The species[物种] responsible for this image is a local monarch[主宰] of the family, the patriarchal saguaro [pictured] of southern Arizona. In some 200 years of slow growth, it may attain a height of 50 feet [15 meters] and a wealth of holes and scars from the creatures it helps to shelter[躲避] or feed."
