The thesis deals with the transformation of Mr. Darcy, in Jane Austen's pride
and prejudice, from a traditional arrogant gentleman of blood to a more
amiable late-eighteenth-century gentleman of sensibility. Historical data on
the evolution of the English gentleman during the late eighteenth century
provides background information. The transformation in the novel, triggered by
an affectionate courtship between Darcy and Elizabeth, reveals the ideal
gentleman for both Austen and her time. Birth alone cannot constitute a
perfect gentleman. A kind heart sensible to others' feelings and sufferings,
together with proper manners, are the marks that make a nobleperson truly
praiseworthy. Therefore Darcy's primary haughtiness as a gentleman of blood
causes strong objection and repugnance among the other characters. His
highborn standing makes him believe absolutely in his gentlemanly identity,
until the moment he is accused of being unworthy of it during his insulting
marriage proposal to Elizabeth. He is highly mortified and gradually awakens
to change. In order to repair his reputation and gain Elizabeth's love, he
abandons his previous contemptuous manners to live up to the standards of the
new gentleman of sensibility. He becomes polite, hearty, and compassionate,
capable of loving and helping Elizabeth's family. The prevalent middle-class
qualities have been acknowledged by him, by which he wins public respect.
Elizabeth therefore accepts his second marriage proposal. Their courtship is
consummated by the completion of Darcy's transformation. He has finally won
Elizabeth's love and his reputation. Austen thus reveals her strong preference
for the emergent ideal of the gentleman of sensibility during the mid-and-late
eighteenth century.
